Am I eligible and what do I need to bring with me to the Registry of Motor Vehicles to get a learner's permit?
To get a learner's permit you MUST BE 16 YEARS OF AGE! You must bring your original birth certificate, social security card, completed learner's permit application(signed by a parent or guardian if under 18 years of age), and $30 for the written test fee. You do not need an appointment - just go to the RMV to take the test.
Am I eligible to take road lessons?
You can begin road lessons with us as soon as you have your permit.
Am I eligible to take my license test?
As soon as you have had your permit for at least 6 months and obtained your driver education certificate or are over 18 years of age you may schedule your license test.
When are driving lessons available?
Driving lessons are available by appointment Monday through Saturday from 8:00am and 8:00pm.
What is observation?
The Observation requirement is when a student observes another student during a driving lesson from the back seat.
How do I schedule a road lesson?
Call our office Monday through Thursday 8:00am thru 7:00pm, Friday 8:00am thru 5:00pm, or Saturday 8:00am thru 2:00pm.
Am I eligible for the Driver's Education Class?
You are eligible to take the Driver's Education Class when you are at least 15 years and 9 months of age but you must be at least 16 years of age and have a permit prior to taking any on-road instruction.
How do I register for the next class?
You can register for the next class by clicking the "Next Class" button on the left or calling our office at your convenience.
How do I schedule a License Test?
You must call the RMV to schedule a road test Monday through Friday. We can NOT schedule road tests.
How long is a driving lesson?
Each driving lesson is 90 minutes.
Where can I be picked up for a driving lesson?
You may be picked up or dropped off at home, school or office. Please notify instructor prior to lesson so proper planning can be done.
How far in advance should I schedule my driving lesson?
We will do everything possible to accomodate your needs. It may be possible to schedule the same day or as much as 2 weeks out during busy times.
How does a student obtain a driver's education certificate?
The RMV will not send certificates directly to students. You need to go to the RMV website on our links page to print if you are relocating out of state. Otherwise you do not need the certificate hard copy in order to book your road test. You just need to have been sent for by Chelmsford Auto School and entered into the RMV system in order to book your road test. Call us if you have completed everything and it has been at least 10 working days if you have any issue booking your test.
I completed 30 hours of classroom with another driving school or at my high school. Can I complete my behind the wheel and observation with Chelmsford Auto School?
Yes. This is called Limited Participation. You must provide us with documentation that the classroom instruction was completed which can be obtained from your previous driving school or high school.
What if I miss a class?
Every effort needs to be made to attend your scheduled class but we understand that conflicts do happen. If you need to make up a class we typically have several classes running each month that you can attend. Please talk with your instructor to coordinate.

Do I need to get a Massachusetts learner's permit if I have an international driver's license?
